More than 270 members from Pastor Goh Yock Kiang’s (YK) Zone participated in the inaugural Adult Summer Retreat from 30 August to 1 September at the Sofitel Palm Resort, Johor Bahru. It was the first time that members could come together for three days of fun, food and fellowship.
There was an air of anticipation as the participants set off from Jurong West together after the Saturday service on 30 August. “I was definitely looking forward to the retreat as it was a much needed break to rest and recharge. It’s not often that we can take time to really get to know the other members from the zone,” said camp participant, Sarah Teo.
The organizers had plenty of exciting events lined up for the three days, and participants had their hands full taking part in fun obstacle courses, sports and other team-building activities.
For some, one of the most memorable moments was the obstacle course which took place on the second evening. Despite being postponed due to the pouring rain, the mood was hardly dampened as team members ran, swam and crawled their way to the finish line through grime and mud.
Event organizer, Vincent Kang, was pleasantly surprised by the enthusiasm displayed by the adults. “It was unexpected. The adults were even more exuberant than the youths.” As a result, the hour-long match was completed in a record time of 20 minutes.
All “warmed up” after the games, Pastor Yock Kiang led the group in sharing sessions. Participants were encouraged and strengthened as they experienced the presence of God. Questions like “What is our life’s purpose?” and “What have we done with what God put in our hands?” resonated deeply with the members. Many of them were challenged to make a difference by bringing transformation to the marketplace, and some even decided to sign up for the School of Theology (SOT) to be trained as effective workers for God.

The passion and hunger for God was evident as more than 100 members turned up each morning for 7am Powerhouse (prayer) sessions. Shane Chiang, Camp Commandant, said, “We had a great time seeking the Lord every morning and evening.”
Indeed, the retreat far exceeded the expectations of the organizers. As Shane aptly put it, “It was a brilliant way to kick-start the YK Adult Summer Retreat, and we hope to outdo ourselves next year.”
