Walt Disney takes the classic German fairytale, Rapunzel, to a new level with this 3D animated musical film. If you have read the story ages ago, and can hardly remember anything about it apart from Rapunzel’s very, very lengthy crowning glory, fear not, for the movie showcases the classic moments, and more. Starring the voices of Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi, the movie brings you from the very birth of the main character, to the expected “happily ever after” in the tradition of every Disney classic.
The story begins with a queen who falls seriously ill during her pregnancy, leading to a countrywide search for a miracle. A servant finally finds a magical golden flower. The flower not only has healing powers, but has the essence of longevity. One who sings to it would regain youth and get healed.
An evil witch, Gothel, who has been using the plant frequently to regain her youth and to attain longevity, is furious when she finds out that the queen had consumed the flower. The queen regained her health, and gives birth to a beautiful baby princess, Rapunzel. A vengeful Gothel then kidnaps Rapunzel in order to regain the power of the golden flower for herself. For 18 years, Rapunzel is locked up in a tower, until the day a thief on the run breaks into her tower to seek refuge.
The gorgeous CGI and 3D effects are balanced by a delightful plot sprinkled with dreams, friendship, love and humor. With the talents of Oscar-winning Disney composer Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty And The Beast) on board, this is one of the best surprise hits of the year. Too bad it’s Disney’s last princess tale, so enjoy every minute of it!
