The weather was perfectly cool at the Family Day held on Sunday, May 1, organized by Wu Yuzhuang and Audrey Ng, City Harvest Church’s district pastor and zone pastor respectively. About 800 people under their pastoral care turned up at the Casuarina Grove at East Coast Park with their families and friends, some with their pet dogs in tow, ready for a day of fun-filled activities.
The afternoon’s program included events like a treasure hunt, a “telematch”, a food eating contest, and a Captain’s Ball match between the two zones. There was also a scheduled 3 km walkathon and a 5 km run which attracted more than 300 and another group which took out their kites and started flying them. For those who were less active, they were content to enjoy a picnic and fellowship with one another.
Joyce Tan, 26, secretary, was one of the organizers of the event. She revealed that one of the main purposes of this event was to give families and cell groups in both zones the opportunity to spend quality time with one another while getting fit.
Wu shared, “Having this event allows the members to interact in a more relaxed environment, while having fun and exercising. It also provides people with ample chances to get to know one another from different backgrounds and to show love to one another. We also especially hope to promote a healthy lifestyle which is important as we grow older.”
Everyone was pleasantly surprised when CHC’s senior pastor, Kong Hee, and his wife, Sun Ho arrived unannounced. Kong and Ho greeted the excited group and flagged off the walkathon-cum-run by sounding a horn.
Among the runners was Gina Gan, 42, a housewife, who participated in the run with her children, Shelyn, 12, and Skylar, 5. All three completed the race. “It is nice to have a family outing and I would definitely like to see more of such events taking place in future,” said Gan.
For Richard Ong, 55, the Family Day was a meaningful time for him and he commented how well-organized the entire afternoon was. “It is good to take time off work and be able to spend quality time with my family. I feel that this Family Day should be held twice a year,” he said.
