The Better Life Series, organized by City Harvest Church, aims to empower CHC members and visitors with practical life skills such as handling finances and relationships. The six-week workshops, targeted at adults and students, will be held at Suntec Singapore Level 2, and will be held in July and August 2011.
This is the second time the organizers are conducting the Better Life Series of workshops; the first one was held in 2008. This year, some topics that will be offered include Marketplace Leadership, Personal Development, Finance (Mastering Your Money), Parenting, Relationships and Marriage. These courses will be conducted by professional individuals who are specialists in these fields.
Jeremy Choy, one of the organizers of Better Life, explains “The topics offered are based on the needs of the congregation. Apart from business topics, we also have courses for young couples and families. For example, to cater to young dating couples in the church, we are offering topics like Happily Ever After; a pre-marital preparatory workshop. We also have a Pregnancy 101 course for new and expectant mothers.”
The lineup of speakers this year includes Michael Griffin, the CEO of Equipping Leaders for Asia, who also holds the posts of director for Asia for John Maxwell’s EQUIP Ministries, Asian director for Man In The Mirror Ministries and regional director of AchieveGlobal. Griffin, who also owns businesses in Indonesia, India, Vietnam, and Singapore, will be facilitating the workshops for the Marketplace Leadership sessions.Choy notes, “We have very good and trained speakers this year. I feel that our members are getting very good value for these quality workshops.”
Soh Beiwen, 27, a CHC member, attended the Financial Freedom workshop in 2008 and benefited greatly from it. She says, “I wanted to learn how to better manage my finances and live a debt-free life. Those sessions helped me in practical areas like effective saving and budgeting, as well as proper financial planning.”
Another CHC member, Chen Xiuwen, 26, a life planner, says, “Personally, the entrepreneurship workshop helped me gain more knowledge on how to start a business. It is not just about having products and services, but having a unique selling point that will result in profitability and sustainability.”
Apart from the necessary knowledge of managing cash flow, sales and marketing, participants also learned about having the right character to do business as well as handling setbacks because businesses are always about longevity. Chen recalls how the facilitator shared the biblical principles he personally used to conduct his business, and drew on his own experiences as examples to illustrate his points.
Choy sums up, “Through the Better Life Series, we hope to see people benefitting from the various courses so that they can become better parents and better workers. Once people are equipped, I believe marriages can be strengthened and businesses can flourish. Ultimately, we want everyone to become better in life.”
