City Harvest Church’s Tuition Ministry conducts study group and O-level crash courses to aid secondary school students.

Thick textbooks and stacks of notes are a common sight at local fast food restaurants when the school examination period draws near. Students often hunt for cool and conducive places to do their revision on the weekend.
With this thought in mind, the Tuition Ministry under City Harvest Church, opened up two rooms in its worship premise at Singapore Expo to allow secondary school students preparing for their examinations to do self-study. The rooms open for one and a half hours every Saturday till this weekend, Sep. 29, and six or seven volunteer tutors are on duty every week to coach the students.
The study group was started to give struggling students the best possible help. The initiative also aims to encourage youth from different cell groups to study together–this would hopefully encourage those who have no motivation to study, at the same time create stronger bonds among the students. Tuition Ministry believes strongly that every student has the potential to excel in their studies and shine for Jesus.
Tuition Ministry sees about 60 students coming to the study group weekly since it began. While the students are encouraged to do self-study, those who need help can bring their questions to the volunteer tutors on duty.
The tutors provided by the Tuition Ministry are qualified individuals who volunteer regularly at the tuition programs at City College. Half of these volunteers are working as school teachers, while the rest are adults with a minimum qualification of a bachelor degree. These tutors specialize in subjects including Food and Nutrition, Physics, Chemistry, Elective Geography, English, Elementary and Additional Mathematics.
Yeo Shi Ting, 17, a student from West Spring Secondary, reflected that after joining the study group, she has a better understanding of the subjects which she was weak in.
Another student who attends the study group, Teoh Jie En, said, “I feel that the environment for this study group initiative is very conducive. It is very beneficial because there are tutors whom we can ask questions when we don’t understand certain things.”
Besides the study group, Tuition Ministry also offers crash courses for O-level students who need intensive coaching. The subjects include Combined Science, Principles of Accounts, Elementary Mathematics and English, lessons are charged at S$50 for four weeks.
