Flying in from Hong Kong for the second leg of her world tour, Rainie Yang Love Voyage, Taiwanese singer-actress Rainie Yang gave fans a new year treat with a three-hour showcase last Saturday at the MAX Pavilion @ Singapore Expo.
With costume changes alternating between black and white ensembles, the theme of the concert portrayed the perennial struggle between good and evil. Garbed in a white gown, she opened the concert with four fast numbers such as “Yang Wang” and “Wei Lai Hello”, which are from her recent albums. Yang also covered songs by Singaporean singers Tanya Chua and Stefanie Sun.
Now 28, Yang began her singing career in the quartet girl group 4-In-Love 12 years ago. After it disbanded in 2003, she took on a hosting gig in the variety television show Guess Guess Guess, which brought her much popularity and turned her into a household name.
Acting offers soon followed, including a role in the hugely popular series Meteor Garden, but it was her lead role in the drama Devil Beside You in 2005 that remains her biggest claim to fame. Due to the many dramas and television variety shows she appeared in, the audience who came for the concert ranged, unsurprisingly, from school-going youth to grandparents.
Dialing the tempo down, she then serenaded the audience with ballads from several albums, dedicating the songs to singles waiting for the right person to appear in their lives. Other numbers encouraged those who have been in failed relationships to be courageous. In between songs, she exhibited candor as she shared about things she was thankful for.
Despite disclosing to her fans that she was still recovering from about off, the sporting lass nevertheless proved her worth as an entertainer as she dived into a glass bowl of water toward the end of the show, possibly referring to a rebirth of sorts in line with the theme of the night.
