City Radio garners a weekly listenership of over 16,000 as it reaches its second year.
The slogan says it all: City Radio is “Here To Connect.”
Providing a platform for listeners to tune in from anywhere in the world, City Radio broadcasts the music of Christendom today.
But music is not all there is. What makes it stand out from other radio stations is that firstly, it is the only Christian online radio station based in Singapore. Secondly, aside from two full-time staff, City Radio’s base of 28 deejays is purely made up of volunteers. Thirdly, City Radio offers programs for Chinese and dialect-speaking listeners. Now, over 16,000 listeners tune it weekly since the station’s launch on April 22, 2011.
Programs Producer Bernard Loh offers another reason why he believes City Radio has that edge.
“Unlike conventional radio, we don’t have a KPI (key performance index) of listeners we must attract and continue attracting so that advertisers would invest in air-time. Free from all that pressure, we can focus fully on producing relevant content, thus connecting on a deeper level,” he says.
Contemporary Christian hits are interspersed between the programs and Loh works with Christian labels such as Integrity, Alby, KI Entertainment and Radio Organic (for their Chinese and dialect programs) to offer listeners spiritual music that is on the cutting edge.
City Radio launched its sixth season in January 2013, with programs such as, “A.B.C.D.E – F – G”, which presents reviews of the latest Christian contemporary songs and albums today.
“Love, Dating And Everything In Between” is a program that interviews the single and the married; and “Cai Mi You Yan Jiang Cu Cha” (literally translated as “Wood, Rice, Oil, Salt, Sauce, Vinegar, Tea”, a Chinese expression used to describe the simple things in life)—a Mandarin program offering zany tips on life.
City Radio would not be complete without its signature program, “Coffee With Kong”—a light-hearted weekly tête-à-tête between Loh and Kong Hee, senior pastor of City Harvest Church, in which they discuss day-to-day topics such as discipleship, the right time to get married, and quiet time with God. A new season of programs is slated to launch in May.
Says Loh, “Every program is crafted and catered to connect with every individual listener. For the past two years, all the volunteer presenters have worked tirelessly for their program and every week they put up something so unique and so personal because they are the ones who embody what City Radio is all about. From the music lover to the soul searcher, every program is carefully packaged to connect.
“And we have done just that.”
In line with their 2nd anniversary, City Radio is giving away an acoustic guitar and a cajon, autographed by Life Church Band (formerly known as the Abundant Life Ministries Band) to the best duet performance. Shoot, upload to YouTube and email the link to connect@cityradio.sg to participate. Join in the fun as well this weekend (Apr. 20-21) at the Reception area before and after service at Singapore Expo Hall 1. To listen to City Radio, log on to www.cityradio.sg.
