Asia’s first dessert and drink shop with self-serve toppings lets you have it your way.
Nestled amongst the shops at *Scape you is a new outlet that seeks to offer milk tea café lovers a different experience. Tea Tozz, which lets patrons self-serve toppings on their desserts and drinks, is the brainchild of former classmates Johan Wong, 29 and Karim Sumilo, 28. It opened in October this year.
Wong says, “We chose *Scape because it is supported by MCCY (Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth) as a place which promotes creativity.” The owners came up with the concept because they wanted their customers to be able to customise their own desserts or drinks.
First, place your drink or dessert order (prices range from S$2.50 for desserts and S$2.90 for drinks). Just like any other milk tea café, you can pay an additional S$0.30 to S$0.50 for your choice of topping but choose the self-serve option and you’ll get a one-time-only, non-refillable, load-up as-much-as-you-want go at the toppings (S$0.80 for drink toppings and S$1.20 for dessert toppings).
According to Wong, popular choices are the milky and aromatic Thai Milk Tea, the Special Milk Tea with Cheese (a combination of milk tea and cream cheese) and the Special Vietnamese Coffee; desserts include The Original Soy Pudding and Thai Milk Tea Pudding.
As for the toppings, options range from Honey Balls to Lotus Seeds and Egg Pudding, but we say try the Magic Pearl—an explosive ball of mango and lychee that bursts upon the slightest nibble. The Matcha Pudding possesses a balance of the tea’s natural fragrance coupled with a subtle sweetness, while the Banana Pudding is stronger and more overtly flavorful; the Chocolate Pudding is reminiscent of chocolate ice-cream.
We’ll be back for more mix-and-match fun (that being said, there are “normal” toppings for those who have no need for such an interactive approach to buying their favorite milk tea.)
