One of Singapore’s biggest and most exciting fitness charity events is about to kick off once again, after a highly successful run last year.
After raising close to $200,000 last year for at-risk youth in Singapore, Operation Broken Wing (OBW) takes place again tomorrow, October 15, 2016 at Playscape at *Scape.
Almost 300 athletes have signed up for the annual grassroots fitness charity event, organised by Innervate CrossFit, a Singapore-based fitness facility that provides Crossfit training programmes tailored to various age groups, from the very young to senior participants.
The premise of the event is simple: Crossfitters sign up to perform a 15-minute workout, and each repetition performed translates to monetary donations from sponsors made to OBW’s beneficiary, REACH Community Services Society.
The main cause championed by OBW is to raise awareness of various issues faced by at-risk youth while coming alongside them to provide practical support and counseling and most importantly, to demonstrate that they do not walk alone in their struggles.
The funds raised last year were used to develop sports engagement programmes for at-risk and community youths, providing a learning and engagement platform for them.
Crossfit is a popular fitness regime that incorporates high-intensity interval training and weightlifting to help improve balance, agility, strength and stamina.
The very first OBW event was held in 2010. This year, it has expanded to include participation from Crossfitters from across the Asia Pacific region, with separate chapters held in Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Australia.
Here are three simple ways to get involved:
1. Sign up
If you’re reasonably familiar with the Crossfit workout or are a fairly fit person, you can register to be an athlete on the day at 8am.
Each athlete will rotate through five stations, completing as many reps as possible at each station within one minute: Row, Burpees, Kettle Bell Swing, Push Press and Box Jumps. After the five minutes are up, there is a one-minute break; athletes need to complete a total of three consecutive rounds.
2. Sponsor someone
If you’d rather break out your wallet than a sweat, sponsor a friend or a family member. The going rate ranges from 20 cents per rep to $1 and above!
3. Show up
Even if you’re not the athlete or the sponsor, there will be fringe events open to the public—try out some fitness equipment or scaled down workouts, and contribute to the fund-raising effort. In addition, Minister for Community, Culture and Youth Grace Fu will be attending as the Guest-of-Honour and she will be participating in some of the workouts. Some of the youth from the beneficiary will also be involved as athletes or judges.
