The singer-songwriter from Hong Kong shares his testimony at CHC.
Hong Kong singer-songwriter Zac Kao enthralled his audience with his charming, affable self during his visit to City Harvest Church in March. Kao performed a song he wrote, and also shared his testimony at three of CHC’s English weekend services.
A melodic verse unfolding, Kao’s self-written “Don’t Disturb Love” is a unique ballad—its lyrics honor God while spelling out the process of love. Cantopop artist Sammi Cheng performed the same song and topped the charts.
Before arriving on the shores of Singapore, 32-year-old Kao was already familiar with Kong Hee, founder and senior pastor of CHC, and many of his teachings. Listening to Kong’s sermons while driving every day framed his spiritual journey, and kept Kao in tune with the Word. Last year, when Kong traveled to Hong Kong for the “Revival Chinese Training Conference”. Kao was in the audience listening intently. Impacted by the preaching, he was eager to make a trip to Singapore to meet the congregation he had heard about.
Growing up in a Christian home—his family attended a Baptist church in Kowloon—Kao experienced a heart crushing moment at the tender age of six when his mother was diagnosed with liver cancer. Shortly after the diagnosis, a popular Chinese actor, Roy Chiao and his wife, who were fellow church members, visited the household. Chiao, founder of “Artists’ Home”, a Christian Fellowship for actors in Hong Kong, lent his support and brought some stability and much needed comfort to Kao and his family. Till today, even after the passing of Chiao almost 10 years ago, Kao remains grateful to this man who showed his support since the beginning and wants to continue the legacy of Chiao through “giving and loving people” wherever he goes.
Being in the entertainment industry for the past eight years has toughened Kao. With each unsuccessful audition or setback, he developed greater resilience. Navigating through this complex industry also led Kao to treasure his fellowship with other like-minded believers.
Recently married, Kao was accompanied by his wife, Jacqueline. Kao shared with the congregation that this was a marriage worth waiting for. He had gone through several failed relationships in his younger days and was constantly searching for love and acceptance to fill the void within him. As time passed, Kao grew dissatisfied and the weight of remorse was slowly creeping into his heart. He repented and decided to realign his walk with God. Acting on his convictions, he drew closer to God and eventually he was rewarded when he met Jacqueline. Together, they encourage many other dating artists to step boldly into marriage, nudging them forward in their faith journey.
The future looks bright for the Kaos as they begin their married life together. With each day, Kao is learning to be a good husband, cherishing every moment of marital bliss. As for his career, he expresses his desire to take things one step at a time, trusting God to show him the right doors of opportunity. Either way, the good-looking all-round entertainer is set to shine in the entertainment industry, God’s way.
