The iLookGood Discover Your Style Workshop taught participants to up their style factor through smart dressing.
Fashion fades, but style is eternal—so says legendary designer Yves St Laurent. On April 24, 130 participants turned up at the workshop “Discover Your Style” to glean some grooming lessons from personal development trainer Celest Foo and guest speaker Arthur Tan, who is a celebrity stylist. The event was held at the Singapore Expo Conference Hall 1.
The workshop kicked off with an introduction to fashion and styling, as well as the importance of a good first impression. “Being well-groomed is an essential tool for developing self-confidence. When we take time to dress for success, we tend to feel great about ourselves. Style is an art of living. A great personal style paired with a striking personality is a sure-fire recipe for success. We need to discover our own unique style because style communicates our personality to the highest level,” advises Foo.
The workshop taught the participants to understand their body shapes, learn about their strengths and weaknesses, and how to appreciate and love their bodies, regardless of what shapes they come in. Lessons shared also included the criteria of a piece of good garment—fit, fabric and proportion.
Says Foo, “I chose five different basic styles to share in details and helped the participants to visualize how they could adopt different styles for different

occasions. For each style, I suggested some overseas and local designers, so that they could keep a look out for the labels when they shop. Dressing your best, however, involves more than just knowing what you like to wear—you must know what suits you and what helps accentuate your figure.”
Celebrity-stylist Arthur Tan, who styled American R&B superstar Beyonce at the F1 Rock Concert, gave great insight to the cuts one should and should not wear for different body shapes. The highlight of the workshop was the segment on latest trends titled “What’s in for Spring/Summer 2010?” Says Foo, “We brought many outfits from the new season including dresses, tops, jackets, belts and scarves for the participants to see, and to show them how we can match certain clothes to achieve the most desirable style.”
Beyond the basics, participants were also enlightened in the dos and don’ts from the style files of top designers such as John Galliano, who has been quoted saying, “Don’t wear something everyone else is wearing. Life’s too short to be mundane. Try pairing things that contrast, for example, something very refined with something a bit ‘savage’!”
The participants were challenged to look at things differently, to step out of their dressing comfort zone and to dare to be creative. Toward the end, they were also encouraged to put what they have learnt into practice.
Besides being a personal development trainer, Celest Foo is also a leading air stewardess/trainer with Singapore Airlines and an ex-beauty queen. She is also an active participant of social works and is currently writing two books on personal development, targeted to launch in 2011.
