City Harvest Children’s Church held a handicraft workshop for kids and the results were sweet.

It was a girlie gathering on Jun. 7 in City Harvest Children’s Church. Girls aged 10 to 12 gathered in the Jurong West premises where they were treated to a full day of princess fun.
The WonderSweet Workshop, conducted by Daphne Tan, provided an afternoon of exhilarating fun for the girls. Tan is the founder of TheWonderSweets.com, a website that provides dessert ideas. As part of Children Church’s holiday program run by Children’s Church, the workshop provided hands-on sessions on soft clay modelling, designing of bookmarks and brooches, a manicure session and a cupcake decoration course.
Organizers of the event told City News that the purpose of this event was to teach the girls some craft skills. Such workshops had received great response previously—the kids seemed to love the prospect of making new things with soft clay. The participants were limited to the 10-to-12 age group, who had better mobility skills and are more independent in their learning.
The session started at 10am with children learning how to handle soft clay. Each of them had a chance to use their hands to feel the soft clay, moulding them into different shapes and patterns. The kids were unusually quiet as they focused on their tasks at hand, totally engrossed. The girls also had a go at making pretty bookmarks and brooches.
When all the craftwork was done, it was time for some pampering! Volunteers from Children’s Church came down especially to give the girls a manicure session during the break. Squeaks of excitement filled the air as their petite little fingernails were embellished with finger stickers resembling gemstones.
One excited participant, Valerie Chee, 12, exclaimed, “I love my manicure, especially the gem stones!”
Alexandria Goh, 11, and her friend, Rane Ong, 12, were just as excited about their manicures. “We love our manicure. We chose different colours but the same design,” they said proudly.
After the grooming and refreshment break, the children moved on to the highlight of the day–cupcake decoration!
The children were visibly excited at the prospect of putting pretty icing on the cupcakes. Each girl was given six cupcakes to decorate. There were many different varieties of icing available so the girls could unleash their creativity.
“The icing is very sweet! I am going to bring home all the cupcakes that I decorated today, and give them to my family,” 12-year-old Alwyna Yong said with a smile.
This event not only gave the girls a chance to learn new skills, but it provided a platform for them to make new friends too. They left the workshop with six cupcakes, dressed-up nails and hearts full of joy.
