Coming soon—an Easter mini-musical that will make you rethink the crucifixion.
By Yong Yung Shin
The Easter story is one that is familiar to most; Jesus is crucified, dies and resurrects on the third day as the risen Savior. The creative team at Oops Asia, however, wants to draw audiences closer to the heart of Jesus—as one who did not have to, yet willingly went through the ordeal—in its upcoming mini-musical, What Is Love?
“It tells the story of the child Jesus growing up, and how He chose to love us, despite the faithlessness, betrayal and injustice He suffered. It gets people to think about their own standards of love, compared to Jesus’ unlimited capacity to love,” explains August Lai, Oops Asia’s director of musicals who oversees conceptualization and production of musicals.
“Many know about what He’s done on the cross, but this musical aims to portray a more intimate picture of Him saying, ‘This is my choice.’”
With a cast of just six, it is an Easter story retold in a “contemporary, minimalist setting, with music that stirs the heart and imagination of the audience,” adds Lai, who wrote the script as well as the songs.
The idea for the musical was birthed when Lai attended the Asian Worship Convergence conference in September last year. Greatly inspired, he put pen to paper, and within a week, most of the material had been written.
Oops Asia is a music production house which aims to mentor future generations of songwriters and musicians to serve and minister through music albums, concerts and outreach events.
