Sri Lanka is an island country off the southern coast of India. In December 2004, a massive tsunami struck the country, killing over 30,000 people.
It is here, in the cities of Badulla and Jaffna, that our orphanage and children’s center helped to rebuild the lives of children who were affected by this destruction and lost their families.
While many of the children are Tsunami victims, there are also some whose families have experienced abject poverty and their parents would rather send them to our centers than run the risk of them being sold illegally and recruited by militant organizations. Here are three of the many precious children whose lives have been rescued and transformed as a result of Canaan Sunshine Children’s Home.
15 year old Anton
My sister died during the tsunami and my mother was injured in the destruction and became paralyzed. The rest of us children had to look after ourselves until someone brought us to Canaan Sunshine Children Home. There, me and my siblings were given food, medical help and shelter. In the children’s home, we also had a chance to be educated. Because of Canaan Sunshine Home, I now have a future to look forward to.
15 year old Dhivya
I come from a very poor family where we had only a hut to live in and had to survive on one meal a day. Because I didn’t have enough to eat, I would faint from hunger very often. My father was about to sell me for money to feed the family but thankfully, a relative intervened and brought me to Canaan Sunshine Home. At the home, the workers took care of me and loved me. I dread to think what my life would be if not for the existence of Canaan Sunshine Home. Thank you for preserving my life for me.
18 year old Niluka
I lived in the city of Badulla where we were very poor. My father met with an accident and became paralyzed; my mother had to work in order to earn money for the family. As a result, I had to take care of all my brothers and sisters and had to drop out of school.

Our family situation got to a point where my mother didn’t have a choice but to send me to Canaan Sunshine Home and leave me there. It was the best thing that happened to me as I was loved and cared for by the workers who treated me like their own child. I enjoyed the activities and life in the center and get along well with all the people there.
