On 18 January 2009, JAMs organized Ooga Shaga — Dare to Conquer, a “tribal war” event at the Aloha Loyang resort facility. JAMs stands for Jesus For All Minds, an extended arm of City Harvest, for the intellectually disadvantaged. The event’s purpose was to appreciate the volunteers that have been tireless serving in JAMs for the past year.
And indeed, what a way to give thanks.
Shanti Singaram, one of the organizers of the event, commented that this year, they wanted to do something really wild and out of the ordinary. So, instead of the usual appreciation fanfare held indoors, and staged a tribal war instead.
The volunteers came dressed up in tribal costumes and were ‘battle ready’ to conquer ground for their tribe through a series of competitive games.
One of the games required tribe members to choreograph a tribal dance in the form of local childhood game, “Scissors, Paper, Stone.” The winner of three rounds had the advantage of bombarding the losing team with water bombs, thus conquering the territory.

All in all, the 60 JAMs volunteers came all excited and ready for a great day of fun and fellowship, and they didn’t leave disappointed. Besides making new friends, the volunteers broke off their inhibitions and perhaps even discovered a little of their primal side.
