Defense lawyers for John Lam and Kong Hee took the stand today to appeal against the conviction and sentencing of their clients.

Sentences ranging from 21 months to 8 years were delivered this afternoon for the six. Judge agrees to defer the start date to Jan 11 next year.

Today’s hearing concludes the submissions from both defense and prosecution.

The court cannot be asked to draw inferences about the accused parties’ state of mind without considering the full context of each piece of the prosecution’s evidence, said Senior Counsel Edwin Tong.

The accused parties’ state of mind and their reliance on the advice of professionals, as well as weaknesses in the prosecution’s case made up key points of the defense at today’s oral submissions.
